Surge Protection Connected Equipment Warranties

Buyer Beware…read the “fine print” (Fine Print)

Before writing this document we thoroughly reviewed many different connected equipment warranties from some of the most well known companies in the residential surge protection business.

These warranties included power company meter base units, plug in units, units form some of the major switchgear companies, and other companies who offer whole house protection.  Some of these warranties offer as much as “$150,000 connected equipment warranty”.

First let’s do the math, who in their right mind would sell something for $49, $99, or even $199 and offer to pay up to $150,000 and ever actually have to do so?  Those numbers do not work.

Here are some common stipulations and requirements for these connected equipment warranties.  Some of these products have all of these stipulations and some of them have a few of them. The bottom line is that they all make it very, very difficult, if not impossible for them to ever have to actually pay on a warranty claim.  Don’t be fooled, this is marketing hype at its best.

-The warranty is good for the original purchaser only and is not transferable.

-You must have the original sales receipt for the purchase of the surge protection device and for the damaged equipment.

-Most warranties are 2 to 5 years.

-“Direct lightning strikes” are not included.

-Lifetime Warranty….. lifetime of who or what?  The product, the original purchaser, the item connected to?  Some say “the lifetime of the product is until it fails”.

-Surge protector must show obvious signs of failure.  If it fails you must buy a new one.

-All paths leading into the damaged equipment must be protected by a surge protection unit form the same manufacturer-a/c power, phone, coaxial.

-You must first file with your homeowner’s insurance company and send proof of having done so to surge protection manufacturer along with warranty claim and proof of any payments received form insurance company.

-Payment will be limited to the deductible amount of homeowner’s insurance policy or fair market value of item whichever is less.

-Electronic equipment such as microwave ovens, home audio/ video equipment, computers, etcare not included in warranty.

-Homeowner will be responsible for all cost of packaging and shipping damaged surge protector and damaged equipment back to manufacturer of surge protection device.

-Home must be wired to the most recent version of or fully comply with the National Electrical Code.

Now, our warranty is simple……there are no gimmicks, or stipulations that can’t be accomplished.

It covers the surge protection device.  With some of the warranties above they specifically say that when the unit fails, you must purchase another one.  So, not only do you really not have a connected equipment warranty but you also do not have a warranty on the protector itself.  Ours warranty is 25 Years…. No questions asked.

It is for a fixed time period of 25 Years….this is a defined time period.  A “Lifetime Warranty” ends either when the original purchaser dies or the surge protector fails.

Our warranty is good for 25 Years.  It is transferable to another owner(s) for the remaining time period.

You do not need a sales receipt….only the serial number and phone number on the label on the unit.

Lightning is included.  If you will allow us to properly design and specify a system for your home, it will be protected.
